Community Literacy & Writing ProjectsIn Fall 2006, Habitat for Humanity launched a new initiative, Books for Humanity, which provides each Fort Collins Habitat family with a personal library of basic reference books: atlases, dictionaries, thesauruses, punctuation and style manuals, and concise encyclopedias. Bookcases were donated by Fort Collins’ Sears-Trostel Lumber Company. Woodley’s Fine Furniture, another Colorado company, stained each bookcase. The project also maintains a free bookstore, “BookStop,” which is located at the CORE. The store keeps at least 1000 books on its shelves, which are available for people affiliated with CORE and Habitat to select, free of charge, for further enrichment and personal pleasure. Both of these collections, in the homes of families and in the store, are stocked through donations of funds and books. Barnes & Noble is a continuing contributor. Each year Habitat families are invited to do their holiday shopping at the Family Book Fest. A wide selection of new books is available at no charge, and volunteers provide free gift wrapping. The event is an opportunity for the Habitat families to come together and enjoy themselves. The nights have included choral performances, presentations from local authors face painting, and balloon races. For more information, including opportunities for contributing books, money, and volunteer hours, contact Deanna Ludwin, Books for Humanity Founder, at dludwin@lamar.colostate.edu or 970-219-1353.
