Kids at Work is a program to improve the literacy level of at risk elementary students at Dunn Elementary in Fort Collins, Colorado. This program is based on a successful program carried out on a much larger scale in several cities across the nation, "Learning by Earning".

Kids at Work matches fourth, fifth, and sixth graders who read below grade level (as measured by standardized tests) with mentors who are Colorado State University students. In small groups that meet before and after the regular school day, each mentor engages his/her small group of four or five readers in a discussion of plot, character, theme, and often encourages the students to write. Participating students are paid $1.50 for every book read. The objective of the program is to give incentive to begin reading and to provide encouragement and support so that the participating students become life-long readers.
