Community Literacy & Writing Projects
The National Writing Project (NWP) is the premier effort to improve writing in America. The NWP builds the leadership, programs, and research needed for teachers to help their students become successful writers and learners. Each of the 189 NWP sites conducts an annual summer institute, attended by the most experienced teachers in the area.
In 2002, Colorado State University was named a new site of the NWP. The Colorado State University Writing Project (CSUWP) is a community dedicated to shaping effective writing pedagogies and providing meaningful professional development of northern Colorado teachers. The centerpiece of the CSUWP is the Summer Writing Institute. In this intensive 4-week program, invited teachers from across grade levels and academic disciplines participate in writing groups, share their own effective classroom practices, and learn more about the teaching of writing. Continuity programs are also offered to provide support for CSUWP teachers beyond the Summer Institute and outreach for other teachers beyond CSUWP. Through Inservice Programs, CSUWP teacher-consultants provide professional development for schools throughout the state.
