Community Literacy & Writing Projects

The Colorado State University Writing Center coordinated the YouthOn Restorative Justice writing workshop program during the summer and fall of 2006 through a community partnership with Turning Point Center for Family Development (a non-profit, residential organization serving juvenile offenders and at-risk youth). YouthOn Restorative Justice workshops offered juvenile offenders the opportunity to write about Restorative Justice practices and philosophies.

Coordinated with Restorative Justice programs at Turning Point (Victim Empathy courses, non-violent communication training, victim-offender mediation conferences, etc.), these writing workshops gave youth an opportunity to use the unique process of writing to understand themselves, their actions, and the principles of empathy and responsibility at the heart of Restorative Justice. The project culminated in January 2007 with a booklet of participants' writing that was distributed to Restorative Justice organizations around the state, so youths' perspectives can be incorporated into Restorative Justice training/mediation programs.

If you are interested in this kind of work, please contact the Center for Community Literacy for more information.

Although the YouthOn Restorative Justice program is now completed, keep in mind that the CSU Writing Center welcomes community members to bring in their writing, submit drafts to the online tutorial service, or attend "Writing Across the Curriculum workshops." Please check out their website for more information.
